Good Parenting Skills to Avoid Childhood Obesity

The one thing all parents want is a healthy child. While some things cannot be prevented, the ability to prevent childhood obesity is something a parent has the ability to better control. In the fight against an alarming percentage of childhood obesity reports, a parent is the first line of defense. The first step is to teach a child proper diet and exercise along with education. The key to prevention is to begin early and establish lifetime habits that promote a healthy lifestyle and body weight.
Childhood Obesity – Cause and Effect
As the battle with weight control continues to make headlines, the problem is not lost on our children. In a culture where food tends to be the answer, it is no wonder children have a difficult time controlling their weight. Beginning with grocery stores filled to the brim with pre-packaged foods containing mostly sugar, to the commercials seen on television beckoning children to request their product. As busy work schedules continue to grow, meals cooked at home are slowly being replaced by the nearest fast food place.
Having a better understanding of how children can become obese is as important as knowing what factors childhood obesity can affect. Major obesity concerns are health factors including diabetes and heart problems. In addition, a fat childhood can cause peer rejection resulting in self-esteem and depressive issues. As childhood obesity becomes a growing risk factor, parenting should include teaching about it as well.
Childhood Habits for a Lifetime
When deciding how to combat childhood obesity, the first plan of action should include training in proper diet and exercise. Beginning with nutrition, cooking meals is a great place to start.

Enjoying a meal together enables you to show not only the type and amount of food, it also reflects good choices. Help children to resist foods ladened with sugar and select fruit instead. Show children it is ok to like vegetables.
With computers and TV continuing to be a major staple in the lives of children, outside activities seem to have almost taken a back seat. Promote exercise in their lives. Find an outdoor or school activity your child enjoys and help them to get involved. Encourage your child to be energetic and always cheer on their progress. If children grow up with proper diet and nutrition to prevent childhood obesity, they are more likely to make those same good choices as adults.
