The Quandary of Overweight Kids

It would appear yesterday’s choices have been replaced with today’s attempts to be all has fallen short when it comes to overweight kids. Reports indicate the number has more than doubled in the past few years. With this number increasing on a daily basis, one has to wonder if there should not be more concern than currently seen. With the medical and psychological ramifications facing overweight kids, every parent should be seeking a solution to avoid this pattern.
In previous years, much emphasis was placed on the value of prepared meals and nutritional food choices. As society evolved, it seems this same need was replaced with convenience resulting in our children paying the price. Children already face an array of social issues and being overweight only causes additional hardships. With such importance placed on appearance being overweight is setting a child up to face peer rejection and cruel remarks so easily spouted from the neighborhood bully.
The Results of the Overweight Child
Research indicates as many as 15% of all children in the U.S. are overweight and associate approximately 112,000 deaths annually as a direct result of obesity. With such staggering numbers, it would appear to be an epidemic. In addition, health problems directly related to overweight children can include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol and even early puberty.
Additional conditions including skeletal and digestive problems can also pose serious health risks on overweight kids. Carrying excess weight puts a burden on the entire body that can make simple movement painful and limit the ability to breathe correctly. The harder it is to get around, the easier it is to develop a sedentary lifestyle. The end result can have many of these kids struggling for breath.
The only viable solution to this ongoing problem is to implement a good diet and exercise for our overweight kids. We must take control back to be successful in the fight for childhood obesity. In teaching children that good nutrition includes lean meats along with plenty of fruits and vegetables we are beginning the road to recovery. Helping children to make good food choices and limiting sugar in their diet will only assist in developing healthy kids.
With additional statistics showing 70% of all adults also have a weight problem; it would seem it may be a family affair. Since kids learn from what they see setting a good example is the first step towards helping overweight kids. Introduce a healthy diet and exercise plan then join in. The positive results could be staggering in helping to eliminate excess weight.
The risks are too high concerning overweight kids and it is up to parents to become involved in establishing patterns that children will need to fall back on when faced with bad food choices.

Modification and discipline are major factors in making a change where these kids are concerned.
