The population of overweight kids in America has exploded in the past few years. Many would want to know the cause for such and how it can be addressed. One of the causes is the lifestyle many have, which is downright unhealthy. Snacking is synonymous with a bag of greasy potato chips while meals are also fatty and processed with a disinclination for fresh and natural food.
Sadly, Americans have forgotten what healthy food is both in the content nutrition and the proper servings per meal. And the overweight kids in America would suffer the most because many preventable diseases are formed much earlier in life and would haunt them into adulthood.
Making matters worse with an unhealthy diet is the inactive lifestyle that Americans have chosen. Since this is what the percentage of overweight kids see, they follow by example. More and more younger children are seated in front of their televisions, gaming consoles and personal computers disavowing any physical activities. The overweight kids of America refuse to sweat it in the playgrounds because they have problems breathing and being the object of ridicule or simply because of the lack of support from their parents.
Since overweight kids in America waste too much time in front of the television sets, they are thus bombarded with as many as 40,000 advertisements per year. And more than three quarters of all advertisements are about fast food joints, candies and sugary food stuff. Many studies show that these advertisements have a great influence over food choices in children.
Time spent in school also pose great problems in overweight kids in America. Many cafeterias in schools still sell sodas and vending machines filled with junk food. Another issue is serving lunches with saturated fats that exceed federal limitations. And sad enough, a little over a quarter of the total student population in high schools is active in any form of educational program. Nutritionists have described schools as toxic areas for these reasons.
What Can Be Done
Since there is now a wellspring of the consequences which a great percentage of overweight kids in America would be facing in the future, action is now being taken by concerned citizenry.
Obesity task forces are being created in nearly all states. Laws are being promulgated requiring nutritional improvement of meals in schools and the prohibition on the sale of high-calorie soft drinks and junk food in cafeterias. Also, many have joined in programs and campaigns seeking to improve the state of physical education programs in the schools.
These actions are being done all throughout the country but the most important component is parental participation in the diet and activities of children. Changes can be done to combat the epidemic of overweight kids in the United States.
